Preparatory School

Foundation Phase (Reception To Grade 3)

In the Foundation Phase we embrace a broad, balanced and creative curriculum, where learners are encouraged to challenge themselves and reach their full potential. We guarantee a warm, exciting and caring atmosphere, dedicated and challenging teaching and excellent facilities – in short an environment where your child’s learning will flourish. Class sizes are small and flexibility in the timetable ensures a high degree of individual attention. The teaching style is multi-sensory and the school day is organised around a regular routine, with plenty of opportunity for outdoor time, access to the arts, the opportunity to perform and to take part in sports and fitness activities. Staff is warm and enthusiastic and values each student as uniquely special. Every pupil’s abilities and talents are identified and developed through carefully planned, differentiated tasks, encouraging each individual to become a self-motivated learner and confident communicator. Students learn to use their initiative and to be independent learners, to be creative and curious about the world around them and to take risks and work collaboratively.

Senior Preparatory

The main aim of Senior Primary is to prepare successful children for their journey through their schooling careers. Project-based teaching, a knowledge of learning styles and a solid foundation will ensure success in this area. Lessons come alive with technology, empowering each child to take ownership of their learning and flourish as creative and critical thinkers. In addition effective study and leadership skills will be developed, explored, practised and refined. Collaboration is an essential part of school life and learners are taught to work effectively together in the classroom, playground and sports field. School life is inspiring! Wherever possible, the skills and learning will focus on real life experience and links will be made with the local and wider community. We focus on fostering independent thinking and learning skills, developing initiative and creating a love of learning. Once equipped with these skills, learners find it a seamless transition to their choice of senior school.

Curriculum

Amedeo has a creative approach to building a curriculum that meets the requirements of the statutory CAPS syllabus. Amedeo offers a curriculum that has clear educational purpose, is delivered with imagination. Rather than subjects driving the curriculum, it’s the needs of children that should determine the emphasis. At Amedeo we know this. Balancing children’s needs with the creative curriculum will always be a challenge, but instead of the two acting in opposition we can ensure the content of the curriculum meets the needs of children and fulfils the requirements.

Principles for creative themes

At Amedeo, we plan creative themes, whilst keeping the following principles in mind:

1. We make it real

The more real the learning experience, the more likely it is that children will engage. Amedeo makes the theme real to children – it should not be abstract or too far removed from their experience. If something is based in the past, for example, try to think of the legacy it has left and start with that.

It supplements the holistic approach and development adopted by Amedeo.
